Something's Gotta Give

I have gypsy blood. Or something.

I've been in Livermore since June... and I am so ready to leave. Not that I don't love my community here to pieces. I think having such a strong community behind me is what enables me to strike out into the world with confidence.

I have all these ideas, all these dreams. How do I choose what's next? How do I know what God's plan is? I am listening. Praying. Itching to go.

Seriously it's like I have bugs under my skin. That's how bad I want to go.

I want to go to India and take 400 million photographs. I want to hike through the jungle again (this time fearlessly). I want to teach English in Korea. I want to lay on the beach in Fiji. I want to eat myself silly in Thailand. I want to help the helpless, save the lost, bring light to the cause... and here I am, in one of the richest communities in the world, making lattes. Sigh.

The words on the bottom of the church bulletin constantly replay in my mind

What do I do now?

Church of Peet's

So I work at Peet's Coffee. (Please don't stalk me.) I really like my job. I love coffee, I love interacting with customers, I love the people I work with... but what I really love is the community. Coffee shop community... or as I shall refer to it from here on out, the Church of Peet's.

For awhile now I have been meaning to blog about the older couples that come in every morning together. There are three of these couples in particular that I just love. One couple walks to Peet's together, one couple gets their coffee for here and sits together for the better part of an hour, and one man- when his wife isn't with him- always brings her something. I love that they set aside time to be together. They all seem like they have been married a long time- they're older and have that deep cadence that married couples have... I want to be like them. They make my heart happy and give me something to aspire to.

But that's not what this entry is about.

By about 10am every morning every chair in the cafe has a butt in it. People talking, catching up, making deals, studying the Word. It's amazing. There are a lot of Bible studies that happen at Peet's on a weekly basis. It amazes me how many of our regular customers are Christians. It's probably safe to say that at any given time there are Christians meeting in that space sharing their lives, studying or praying. I love it!! I feel like I am a part of something bigger. God is moving. He is here.

Today when I was taking the trash out I overheard a man sharing the Gospel with another man. The basic gospel. Missionary status. It was so exciting! And got to be a part of it! The whole time I did trash I prayed for them. It was awesome.

Man, God is so good. This is a great time to be alive.

Love and Sparkles

Let's try this again.

This is the sweet headband that I made. It took about 5 minutes and cost a grand total of about $2.36 and it gets quite a few comments from Peet's customers. I think it was well worth the investment.

Free Falling

It started last Sunday- no Saturday Evening at Nina's house. I got irritated with Jimi on the drive over and had just gotten back from a disastrous work week in Las Vegas-- my composure was worn quite thin.

When we walked in the door Nina asked how I was, and standing in the middle of the kitchen with 3 other couples I could not answer, only cry. It was a surreal moment in many ways. The moment took me back to when Granddaddy died and seeing Mom cry about it. The way she put her hand over her mouth like it might hold it in, and then heaving shakes when it didn't... That is just how I cried on Saturday night, though for fading dreams and tattered nerves, not a lost Daddy.

Nina hugged me and thanked me for being honest (as if I had a choice!) and Nancy was attentive and caring. It was a short breakdown, but it is somehow seared in my memory. I was wearing Aunt Mary's plaid jacket.

The next morning we went to Grace Community Church. I hadn't heard much about it, except that my mom knew who the pastor was and that I may have heard him on the radio a time or two.

The Church was much bigger than I was expecting, but not at all overwhelming. We found our seats and the service began. The music was presented by a 100+ person choir and large symphonic band. Not an electric guitar to be found. The songs were all sung from the Hymnals in front of our pews. Now this is Church. It felt so good to worship God in a way not specific to popular culture.

John MacArthur's sermon totally blew my mind. He spoke not of how we can become better people, or of the sacrifice Jesus made for us, or of what we can do for this or that... He taught about the Church. Who we are in relationship to God the Father and God the Son. The Father made a promise to the Son before time began that He would give him a bride. The bride is the Church. We are a gift from Father to Son- the reason they love us so much is because of the unbelievably perfect infinite cosmic love between the two of them as Father and Son. We as the Church (Christians) get to play a role in this cosmic love story that is SO MUCH bigger than us. Praise the Lord! I don't know about you, but I am so glad it's not all about me. That's just too much pressure, and not enough substance.

So church was amazing I couldn't wait to text everyone all about it.

That night I fell asleep reading God's word and reveling in the delight of learning something new about our God.

I dreamed I was flying.... flying up! up! up! 'Til I could go no higher. I realized once I got all these thousands of feet up that I could not fly down. I started to fall. Falling like a bad dream, falling that makes your stomach hurt and your heart race.

Then I realized that there was nothing I could do to stop the falling. Nothing. The pain and fear were only making matters worse. So I rolled over onto my back, still falling, and let go. Let go of the pain and fear and I just relaxed. I knew God was there. I knew He would catch me. I knew not when, or how, but no doubts plagued my mind. There I found the "Peace of God that transcends all understanding" (Phillipians 4:6 & 7).

I have never in my life felt an absolute release of anxiety like that and I did not want to let it go. I took a personal day off of work to seek out God and what this all meant for me. Can I feel that peace on a regular basis? The Bible says I can, but how can I hold onto it? (The key, of course, is to let go!)

The next day I went into work as usual. When I arrived, my boss called me into her office to discuss what I assumed was the recap on the week prior. She prattled a little bit then said, "I can't afford to keep you...." Don't know what she said after that because my ears were thumping so loud. thump thump freefall thump thump just relax thump thump....

So here I am. Free falling.

Beverly Hills: Pros and Cons

So I had to go to Beverly Hills for a road appointment today. (Road appointment: think Avon Lady but with a rolling rack with a body bag hanging on it.)

It is nice to get out and it breaks up the day... but it's a gigantic pain. I spent most of the time going over the pros and cons in my head. I should have emailed them to myself, but who has time for that?

Pros:
- Being in Beverly Hills on a major shopping street during the day on a weekday exponentially increases one's chances of seeing a celebrity. I love celebrities.

- Cruising with the windows down and the radio up on Robertson Avenue during office hours on a beautiful day. Gotta love that.

- The abundance of coffee shops makes a pit stop inevitable. (Thanks Peet's!)

- Beverly Hills = $$$ ... seeing people rolling in Bentleys and Lamborghini's gives me a) hope that I may one day roll in a G Wagon and b) that at least someone has money.

- Did I mention the high chance of seeing someone famous? Cause that's a good one.

Cons:

- Not actually seeing anyone famous. Ugh.

- Did I mention the body bag on the rolling rack? Picture that... now picture me trying to get it all out of my car. On a slant in a parking garage. Next to a $200K car.

- Being the only one on the street that is working... and sweating... and rolling a body bag. (This is a pro on one count- the homeless people didn't ask me for money. There were two of them. Hey, if I was homeless you better believe I'd be panhandling in the richest part of town!)

- Going back to work.

Casey + Mandy = Best Friends Forever

So our showroom reps Mblem by Mandy Moore... So we all knew we would eventually meet her.

Se came in this week, looking a little tired (she had been with DJ AM in Georga or something)... I got nervous as she walked in thinking "OMG, OMG, play it cool, play it cool..."

Thankfully, I succeeded. She and her manager, John, introduced themselves to all of us individually (more than most of the designers do when they come in!). She was so nice!! I, like, love her even more now! She was friendly and you could tell she was really just a nice person. She didn't act like a famous actress/singer at all.

Mandy is so normal! She wasn't wearing much makeup and is build about like me. Same height, same size. Sweet. BFF's for sure.

I look forward to seeing her again!

(I loved her hair short!)

It's time to live the dream

After talking about moving to LA for, like, two years the time has come for me to actually do it!

Tomorrow is my last day at work. I baked cupcakes for everyone and printed out my contact information on cute little business cards. I think it will be hard to leave tomorrow evening... but once I do I will go running! I absolutely love the people that I have spent the last year (ish) with. If it hadn't been for them I would've quit long ago and never looked back!

Starting Monday I will be pounding the pavement down in LA looking for just the right job. Ideally, I will find something in styling... but I would be perfectly happy doing anything for a fashion company that I can believe in and whose product I can really get behind. (If you know anything, help a sister out!)

All Work and no Play...

So I'm browsing the 65% off rack at work on Thursday night (it was slow) wearing what I thought was a cute outfit. Grey slouchy boots with strapless red satin Cory Lynn Caulter dress with a stripped t-shirt underneath.  I am chatting with a co-worker over the rack when a manager from another department walks over.

I'm waiting for her to chastise us for shopping, but instead she picks through the rack and makes friendly conversation with us... and then... she asked me if I was pregnant. OMG. Hello! You're never, ever supposed to ask a woman that!! So... I did my best to make her feel bad. It was kind of amazing, actually. I bet she never looks me in the eye again.
